Master Class:
A master class with Sir James and Lady Jeanne Galway and College of Music students will be held Wednesday, March 22 at 10 a.m. in Grusin Music Hall in the Imig Music Building. This master class is free and open to the public for observation.

Sir James Galway is regarded as both a supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire and a consummate entertainer whose appeal crosses all musical boundaries. Through his extensive touring, over fifty best-selling albums, and his frequent international television appearances, Sir James has endeared himself to millions worldwide. This memorable performance also features Lady Jeanne Galway, an accomplished flutist who has performed extensively throughout the world, and the distinguished Polish Chamber Orchestra.

Sir James Galway
Sir James Galway, nicknamed “the man with the golden flute” is widely regarded as both a supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire and a consummate entertainer whose appeal crosses all musical boundaries.  As the most televised and recorded classical artist performing today Sir James has made himself a legend, a modern musical master whose virtuosity on the flute is equaled only by his limitless ambitions and vision.  Through his extensive touring, over 30 million albums sold, and his frequent international television appearances, Sir James has endeared himself to millions worldwide. He continues to tour the world endlessly bringing his unique sound, superb musicianship and dazzling virtuosity, to audiences young and old. Highlights of this season include concerts in major cities throughout the USA, UK, Europe and Asia. He also holds the illustrious position of principal guest conductor of the London Mozart Players with whom he tours regularly.

Born in Belfast, Sir James Galway began playing the penny whistle as a small child before switching to the flute.  He continued his studies at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, followed by the Paris Conservatory.  He began his career at the Sadlers Wells Opera and the Royal Opera Covent Garden, which led to positions with the BBC Symphony Orchestra where he played piccolo, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra where he was Principal Flute.  In 1969 he was appointed Principal Flute of the Berlin Philharmonic.  In 1975 Sir James launched his career as a soloist and within one year he had played 120 concerts, including appearances with all the London orchestras.

Sir James Galway tours extensively in the US and Europe.  Highlights of the 2004-2005 U.S. season include orchestral performances with orchestras such as: the National Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Houston Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and recital engagements in cities such as: New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Ann Arbor, Bowling Green and others.

As an instructor and humanitarian, Sir James is a tireless promoter of the arts. He discharges much of his free time as president of Flutewise, a non-profit organization that donates instruments to low-income students and young people with disabilities. Along Sir James Galway’s busy performing schedule he finds time to share his wisdom and knowledge with the generations of tomorrow.   He also holds the title of special representative of UNICEF.

Sir James Galway has also shared the stage with an amazing array of entertainers and Musicians ranging from Stevie Wonder and Henry Mancini, Cleo Laine and performed for such dignitaries as President Clinton, Prince Charles, Earl and Duchess of Wessex, Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth II and Pope John Paul II.

Sir James Galway recently signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon. His first release Wings of Song reached #1 spot first week of release. He also has a discography of over 60 CD’s with BMG/RCA classics.

Sir James Galway was named the 1997 Musician of the Year by Musical America. In February 2004, Sir James was given the President’s Merit Award from the Recording Academy at the Grammy’s 8th Annual “Salute to Classical Music.”  Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England has twice honored him. In 1997 he received the Order of the British Empire and in 2001 the Knighthood for services to music.

Lady Jeanne Galway
Lady Jeanne Galway in addition to her successful career as a soloist is also an accomplished chamber musician who tours with her chamber music trio Zephyr, comprised of pianist Jonathan Feldman and cellist Darrett Adkins. Their first recording titled “Zephyr – Winds of Romance” includes works by Haydn, Martinu and Weber. She also collaborates with a varied array of ensembles including renowned guitarist, Christian Hoffstettler, the soprano Yuko Takemichi and the New York based Cassatt String Quartet. 

Renowned for her dedication to the development of young flutists she is Vice President of Flutewise, an educational organization for young flute players. She frequently conducts Flutewise Master Classes and released a new CD for Flutewise with Phillip Moll. She is a native of New York and graduate of Mannes College of Music in Manhattan.

Polish Chamber Orchestra
The Polish Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1972 as an orchestra for opera. Under the leadership of Jerzy Maksymiuk, it underwent such rapid artistic development that it soon left the orchestra pit and dedicated itself exclusively to the performance of concert music. The independent orchestra tours the world constantly and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Warsaw Autumn’s Orpheus as well as prizes at the Poznan Spring Festival and the Wiener Floetenuhr for its recordings of Mozart. The orchestra has had numerous guest conductors including Charles Dutoit, Leopold Hager, and Hans Graft while featuring many soloists over the years including Galway, Kiri Te Kanawa, Martha Argerich and Yehudi Menuhin who stated “Work with no other orchestra has given me as much satisfaction as my work with the Polish Chamber Orchestra.”
