Overview:
One act operas deliver a strong dramatic statement as these works by two masters demonstrate. Furniture comes to life to teach a naughty child a lesson and fingers are in danger of being lost as punishment for altering a will. Dry humor and extreme situations recall two pitfalls of all humanity: greed and petulance. Sung in Italian and French with surtitles.
Synopsis:
Gianni Schicchi
The relatives of the recently dead Buoso Donati try to alter in
their own favor his will leaving his fortune to a monastery. Schicchi
is called in, and yields to pleas for help from his daughter Lauretta,
in love with Buosos nephew Rinuccio. He offers to impersonate
the dead man, whose death is not yet public, and dictate a new will
leaving money to the relatives; first he warns them of the serious
penalties involved in the event of discovery. In bed, disguised
as Buoso, he them leaves the most valuable properties to himself,
later giving the house to the lovers.
