Gluck's opera, based on the tragic greek myth, dramatizes Orpheus' journey into the underworld to rescue his newlywed bride Eurydice. With his enchanting music, Orpheus is able charm the gods of the underworld who control Eurydice's fate, thereby freeing her. However a tragic mistake prevents the lovers from returning together to the world of the living.
