Biography

CarthyNicholas Carthy, CU Opera Music Director, studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and made his conducting debut at the Landestheater there in Le Nozze di Figaro. He also served as musical assistant to Bernard Haitink and Sir George Solti at the Salzburg Festival. In 1990, he served as assistant to Daniel Barenboim for a production of Don Giovanni in Berlin and subsequently worked with Barenboim in Chicago (Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cosė fan tutte), Paris (Wozzeck), and at Bayreuth. Mr. Carthy made his Italian conducting debut with the Camarata Accademia of Salzburg and since then has had an intensive international conducting career. He has appeared with such orchestras as the Chicago Symphony, Symphony of Radio Prague, the Slovakian Philharmonic, and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecelia. His operatic appearances include productions at the Volksoper (Vienna), Teatro Regio in Torino, the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli, the Israeli National Opera, and broadcasts on RAI. He has also appeared worldwide as an vocal accompanist, most recently with Waltraud Meier at Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus, La Scala, the Saltzburg Festival, the Suntory Hall (Tokyo), and the Berlin Staatsoper.
