"The Unfolding of Music"

This program follows the evolution of musical style, and of writing for the cello in particular, from Bach to Britten. Audiences take a journey through the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras before landing in the twentieth century. Each of these composers represents the finest that their respective times have to offer: the Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach is still considered by most to be the greatest composer in history; Beethoven served as both the quintessential composer of Classical Vienna and the bridge to nineteenth century Romanticism, epitomized by Schumann. Debussy's Cello Sonata of 1915 is a lush, impressionist work; and Britten's 1960 work is an impressive representation of music from the latter half of the twentieth century.

BACH: Sonata for Viola da Gamba in G Major, BWV 1027
BEETHOVEN: Sonata No. 3 in A Major, Op. 69

Intermission

SCHUMANN: Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70
DEBUSSY: Sonata for Cello and Piano
BRITTEN: Sonata in C for Cello and Piano, Op. 65
